AUBMISSISSAUGA, ON — April 12, 2011 — Survalent Technology, the most trusted provider of smart grid solutions for the control room, announced today that it has commissioned a new Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system for Athens Utilities Board.

Athens Utilities Board (AUB) provides electric power, natural gas, water, and wastewater service to approximately 13,000 customers in the City of Athens, Tennessee, and surrounding McMinn County. AUB maintains over 475 miles of power distribution line, 390 miles of natural gas distribution line, 316 miles of water distribution line, and 125 miles of wastewater collection line.

The new system features Survalent's highly available, open-architecture system operating on VMware platform. The system includes several of Survalent's open system applications, including: Event Data Recorder, Master/Slave Alarm Suppression, IED Wizard, Control Panel, Remote Alarm Annunciation, Command Sequencing, External Clock Interface, SNMP Protocol, and Voltage Control.

"There are several advantages to running SCADA in a virtual environment," states Steve Strauss, Eastern Regional Sales VP, Survalent Technology. "Our customers see a reduction in hardware and operating expense by being able to run multiple application servers on the VMware platform. We believe the trend towards virtualization of utility systems will continue to grow."

The system was endorsed through Survalent's industry partner Hometown Connections, a utility services subsidiary of the American Public Power Association (APPA). "Athens Utilities Board has a long history of utilizing technology to bring greater value to its customers," states Steve VanderMeer, Sr. Vice-President Planning and Marketing, Hometown Connections. "With the deployment of Survalent's SmartSCADA technology, AUB has taken steps to ensure the reliability and safety of its utility systems."
