Fault data, captured and stored in an SEL relay in a substation can be invaluable information for operations personnel. Whether troubleshooting a current problem, or for analysis after outage events, the data is useful to help operations improve reliability and operation of the system. If only that data was easily available to operators and engineers via SCADA.

Now it can be.

Fault Data Recorder is an optional application for Windows or VMS SCADA that will upload and record fault data from SEL relays.  The application consists of a fault recorder editor and an executive program.  In an SEL relay, fault information (fault current, fault type, etc.) is queued and stored in memory inside the relay. Typically this information is accessed by using the SEL software, or some clever/complex programming to bring back fault data and the time stamps. Fault Data Recorder makes this simple by taking care of this for you and providing a menu driven interface to program.

The application de-queues and transfers the fault data to a group of data points within the SCADA database called Relay Summary Event Data. This data can then be displayed on a screen in WorldView for operations.

1. A relay status point becomes “1” if there is at least one set of unread fault data in the relay queue

2. Master station sends a specific control command to the binary output on the relay

3. Relay de-queues the fault data into a set of analog points

4. Master station checks again to grab additional fault data. SCADA continues checking until all data is uploaded from relay. Fault Data Recorder is a valuable addition to SCADA system for operations. For more information, or to request a quote please click  here.
