    United Power case study

“Without a capable ADMS platform, United Power's vision of operating as a modern DSO with hyperlocal generation and storage would not be achievable.”

    The Challenge

As United Power transitioned to a Distribution System Operator model, it needed to actively manage a growing mix of distributed generation, battery storage, and member-owned resources across its network.

This shift introduced new operational complexity. System operators relied on multiple platforms to monitor the grid, manage outages, and coordinate field activities, making it difficult to maintain a consistent, real-time view of system conditions.

The cooperative required a unified platform that could support real-time operations, improve visibility, and enable more coordinated control of an increasingly dynamic grid.

    The Solution

United Power implemented SurvalentONE ADMS as the operational backbone of its modernized grid. The platform integrates SurvalentONE SCADA, OMS, and DMS, and its GIS into a single environment, creating a unified view of the system.

This integrated approach enables all applications to share the same data and network model, improving coordination across operations and eliminating the need for operators to collate data from three to four separate systems.

Automation within the platform further supports grid operations, enabling engineering teams to automate nearly 90% of DER and battery energy storage responses. Operators can program actions such as charge and discharge schedules, while the system executes them automatically—even during complex operational scenarios.

These capabilities have contributed to measurable improvements in reliability and performance. United Power’s outage duration has been reduced to below 70 minutes per meter annually—approximately 40% better than the national average of 120 minutes—while automation and system integration have improved efficiency, coordination, and overall operational visibility.

United Power is a member-owned electric distribution cooperative serving Colorado’s north-central Front Range. Founded in 1938, the cooperative serves more than 115,000 meters across 900 square miles, supporting a diverse mix of residential, agricultural, and commercial and industrial customers. United Power is currently transitioning to a Distribution System Operator (DSO) model to actively manage a more dynamic and distributed grid.
